This is a bulletin to warn the community of a dangerous infection. A malicious program can be downloaded multiple ways. Opening emails that seem legitimate is the most common way to acquire this destructive malware. Unlike other infections that are easily caught by anti-virus or spyware/malware programs such as Norton®, Avast®, or SpyBot® Search & Destroy this program is able to bypass detection.

The common names are AntivirusXP2008, XP AntiVirus 2008, Vista AntiVirus 2008 or AntiVirus 2008. Because of the names, XP and Vista, many have been snared by this. WITH ANY PROGRAM PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT IT HAS THE REGISTRATION "®" MARK BEFORE FOLLOWING THE LINK!!! Note that the XP and Vista do not have the "®" associated, meaning it is not a genuine Microsoft® product.

What happens when infected?

1) The program will throw pop-ups saying "you're infected, download Vista AntiVirus 2008/XP AntiVirus 2008 to clean your computer."

2) Task Manager is disabled- this way you can't turn this specific process off.

3) Computer performance is greatly reduced.

4) If it is not properly removed it can repair itself.

How do I remove then?

This is a widely spreading infection. Altering the wrong file(s) may damage your operating system, requiring a complete reinstall.
